  • Putting ram in a motherboard and powering it does not test functionality. Even a POST memory test just counts the addressable space. You need to set each bit low, and high, and reread the values; and even then you can hit some issues that show intermittently.

  • The body has its own series impedance which reduces the current to the RAM compared with direct connection. Also depending on footwear etc the body capacitance to ground is of the order of 200 pF so there is not much charge delivered. I think you have conclusively proven that current kills chips not voltage.

  • How does Express VPN Launch up? I currently have NordVPN and they recently changed their Login to require Web Browser login then link to app to access the VPN Service, which is a bit Pointless considering it doesn't open a "Private window" so any 'Add-on" get my Activity as well as any trackers on the Browsers main Page and Nords Website. NordVPN also had a possible Exploit last year that they "Fixed" but still they held onto that knowledge longer then they should have and trust for them have depleted.

  • In the first times of MOS technology, I mean NMOS, PMOS, those components are very sensitive to ESD. Nowadays those old technologies have disappeared and are replaced by CMOS with shottky diodes at the input, eventually protecting from little discharge, and you first need to blow one of those diode to kill the circuit behind at the end

    Andrea FrascaAndrea Frasca19 napja
  • It’s a dumb test… ram is extremely sensitive to static. The way ram works is a cell that includes a transistor and capacitor for each bit. Over voltage on a capacitor is extremely bad because it will short or worse.. explode. You can take out a huge portion of the chip with one fault in the array of cells. Would love to see if “curiousmark” a electronics engineer and computer scientist on youtube (most known for his xerox alto work and the Apollo guidance computer work) unlid the ram and show the damage on a microscope.

  • I could see it arcing at the ground clamp when it discharged through his finger. My father used to work for a sizeable company and I got to visit the static free room as a kid, thought it was so cool. Had to put on a special suit and everything and every table, every square foot of flooring has a solid ground. I learned a lot about tech stuff when I was little and that only fueled my passion for electricity and electronics. Now I am working my way through a degree in electrical engineering.

  • Ok so, if anyone is good at electrics or anything that would be great, I went to heat up my tea in the microwave earlier, so I stuck it in, shut the door and everything was ok until I went to turn on the microwave at the plug (I'm in the UK), my right hand was on the microwave not sure if it was the metal side panel or the buttons, and I turned on the plug with my left, and I got a pretty bitching shock on both my fingers, anyone have any idea what the hell just happened? The microwave was ok to use after that, and heated my tea up alright with a couple plastic gloves, but still kinda worried about using it from now on. It was pretty shocking I guess you could say

  • Esd can damage some memory modules so that it still works but bluescreens when the OS tries to use the damaged part of the RAM... Thats what i've seen in the past. RAM can still boot but randomly crash due to partial ESD damage, which is just as useless as completely dead as in this video. You would have to spend few minutes fully testing the ram to detect this

    James FactionJames FactionHónapja
  • Hmm.. Just because a DIMM passes the power on test doesn't mean it's good. I realise it would slow things down significantly, but I'd be interested to see this experiment repeated with a full memtestX86 run between each discharge..
