A great video on a stupid topic that really shouldn't be a problem anymore. Why do we happily allow companies to sell us media in this completely misleading fashion. It's a known problem, but no court case on it has ever asked more of the companies than add a disclaimer. Instead, maybe force them to show the actual usable capacity of the drive they're selling so that they either have to increase the storage to an actual round figure, or sell the drive as the 978 GB or whatever it really is instead of calling it a 1TB. And it's only going to get worse as the sizes of drives increase and the difference creates larger and larger variances. Now is the time to fix the problem.
Nice video
Pretty good summary. Companies that stood to make money push for the standard change and it was approved by a US standards authority not the EU one, although it's been many years maybe it has now. Either way the is no use for a base 10 definition unless you're trying to sell some for more than it's worth. Nobody I know in the tech industry in my country ever use the Mebibyte term and always refer to megabyte as 1024 kilobytes. It was that way it was for a reason, and they want to change it for money or stupid reasons like making it be like the rest of the Si units but then there's no reason for it in the first place. It's about time they drop all this nonsense and go back to the way it was. HDD manufacturers still lied about it back then, it started in the mid 90's and nobody held them to account. Well they started to so that's why they campaigned to fix something that wasn't broke.
5.56TB. On the label should be 6TB.

To answer James's questions at the beginning. How much space your drive haves? Not enough. Are you sure? Yes.

That background (music too) is horrible. The white background is better from a pedagogical point of view.
WTF!? Are you kidding me?! Those things like Kilo-, Mega-, Peta- are greek prefixes we use. Shortening prefix itself gives no sense at all. It is like instead of King's row, you would call it Ki's my row. Those who choiced those names should go back to high school and take phycisc lectures properly atleast (in case you do not have mandatory mathematics, latin or ancient greek).
So how does the file system change the amount of reserved space in a Hard drive? Would it the same for NTFS, ZFS, or exFAT?

At 3:08 James becomes one with his shirt.
3:15 That's because in the OS, it still refers to everything in the binary measurements. The real issue is the advertising allowing 1,000 denominations is misleading and those companies should be penalized for false advertising.

Need help guys. What hardware failure do I have? Whenever I turn my laptop on it shows the NO BOOTABLE DEVICE screen. I always had to change UEFI to Legacy. But when I restart without unpluggging the charger, my laptop starts normally. NO BOOTABLE DEVICE only shows up whenever I disconnect my charger. Note: My laptop battery is not working.
'Her particular address' TF
I thought it was how much space I really have left after windows system files, etc from the title solely

If i get a 200GB SSD i know i'll actually have 185-190, just lower by a few gbs and its nice
This video is incomplete by not mentioning 1.44MB floppy disk mess... It's advertised capacity used mixture of decimal and binary based units.
No one uses the bi terminology. You can finish a full degree in Computer Science and never hear those terms.
If you say check out this video just add video link in the description because searching video sucks....
I discovered a long time ago that 120gb wasn't enough and it was my first laptop, Now there i had a revelation that 500gb is also not enough because my internet is slow and I have to download the porn i watched so that i can rewatch it without buffering interruptions.
FFS NO! I had to teach my teacher about it. There are Bi units for 1024, byte are 1000 steps. There is 0 misconceptions but stupid teachers teaching wrong information. 1 Mb = 1000 KB 1 Mebibyte = 1024 Kibibyte
Me, having 32GB: 👁️👄👁️

My 1tb hdd was 930gb.
I wish that I could afford a larger ssd ha.
Great video! I just wish this video was made 12 years ago when I had an argument with my 10th grade business teacher over this exact topic. This would have given me an extra 5 marks on a test.
I'm the other way around, I've always seen a kilobyte as 1024 bytes, a megabyte as 1024 kilobytes, and a gigabyte as 1024 megabytes (or 1073741824 bytes), and interpreted that as more common. I always just saw the thousandfold increase as something hard drive manufacturers were doing. I hate that the industry has caved to that standard and we're now having to refer to them as kibi/mibi/gibibytes, etc.
It’s funny how sometimes you tap on something expecting to learn something when it’s a topic you already know.
before i watch this video i already have the answer!!! well i 4 shelf, about 2 1/2 is being used right now, so i still have about 1 1/2 over but yeah 4 shelfs
This is all too complicated for my pea sized brain 🧠
Where can I buy your shirt?
Yeah, a lot of Linux distros also use the 1000 byte definition of KB, even Microsoft's calculator does, as far as I can tell it's just Microsoft's File Explorer which insists that a KB is 1024 bytes.
I can assure you the word "bi" has gotten waaaay more acceptance. I know it first hand. Its said around 3:09.
TLDR: Some companies and operating systems mislabel Gigabytes (GB) which is based on powers of 10 as Gibibites (correctly abbreviated GiB) which is based on powers of 2.
Freaking bigotted binary bytes
My 1T SSD is actually 930 gigabytes. I’m suing Samsung now
There was really very little ambiguousness to these terms before they decided to invent the new terms. It was generally accepted in tech circles that a kilobyte was 1024 bytes, etc. It only caused confusion among the uninitiated who didn't know to expect computer data sizes to be powers of two. That was just something that you learned as part of learning about computer technology. However, once someone decided to redefine the old terms to match conventional expectations (read: "those of people unfamiliar with computer technology") and create new terms to replace the old terms in most contexts, the real confusion started. Most people in the tech field were very resistant to that change. Those that heard about the new terms didn't like them, and in turn didn't promote the learning or use of the new terms for others in the industry. It took so long for the new terms to trickle into use that I was unaware of their existence for over ten years, and they still aren't generally used by techs that I know (except as a joke) more than twenty years after their invention. The only people to fully embrace the redefining of the old terms were hard drive manufacturers so that they could mislead customers to think that their drives were bigger than they actually were. I'm not sure whether the redefining of the old terms was the result of some sort of super-pedantry or if there was some other motive, but it didn't serve to eliminate any confusion about computer technology, but has only added to it. This is mostly because the new definitions of the old terms are basically useless in the context of computer technology for anything other than misleading hard drive buyers. In my experience most computer techs continue to use the old terms with their original meanings and only mention the new terms on occasion to mock them.
The answer is how much space you really have
Just wait until they start referring to them as Gigabits instead of bytes
Good thing 1tb ssd is around $79 now Hopefully 2tb ones freefall in price soon
I think whats even worse is people using bit instead of Byte. Usually not in storage but Internet Speeds but those people really are evil
1024MB = 1GB : Computers 101 Microsuck likes to make you think 1000MB = 1GB
Q: How much space do you really have? A: I've got an open space
Advertising that a system comes with 512gb hard drive isn’t misleading. That has nothing to do with how much space on that 512 the os is going to take up. But to be fair I would like to know also how much space is available to use from the get go.
Why are GPU's designed "Upside down"?? Mounting them directly to the MB makes us look at the "Backplate". Why are they this way....just for the few peoples which are mounting them with riser? Some brands makes relay nice looking front / fan desinges....but this way we will never see them ^^
Octane worth it 2021. Got 8tb drive calling for it...
Blame the earlier programmers and computer engineers that decide they can use kilo as anything besides 1000.
Oh, I see, they forgot to chroma key the background blue screen.
human eye can see no more than 640 kilobytes
I stored about 7 TB in the last 11 years.
Oh Just remembered I have a important Stuff folder 📂
I finally understand
You... didn;t really answer the question in the title. You just explained what bits and bytes are
Did you get your $5000 intel upgrade yet?
anyone could have written this summary of a wikipedia article
I had an idea for a Techquickie episode (though I'm not sure how long it would take). For major triple A games (like Cyberpunk 2077) which obviously need top of the line computers to run smoothly, what level of hardware do they need to develop such games? Do they use even more 'state of the art' equipment? (if so has Linus or any in the team played games on them?) or do they have other techniques to develop games using more standard equipment. Thank you in advance and well done with such great content.
I always make sure my OS drive has at least 1 TB(SSD) space and another internal storage drive fr my apps, photos, files and various other apps, including drivers from time to time too (that drive is 1.8TB HDD).
Give Me The White Background

how many inches did he say ?
I have trouble believing 1:46 is not to scale.
Why are screens measured in inches but nearly all other measurements are metric?
how is it not illegal?
What annoys me the most is if you know that system files are going to take a certain amount of space why not just add an overhead. Oh! You have a 500GiB system, sorry but only 300GiB will be users accessible.😒
LTT has a new employee and she is just the best. Guys you must vote for more screen time of this cutie @ 3:46
Better ask how much do you REALLY need
I learned that 1 megabyte is 1024 kilobytes by making minecraft servers. I will alwayer refer to bytes in the orignal binary system & will never settle for anything else.
*Your boss:* Here's your paycheck of $1,000 *ᵃᶜᵗᵘᵃˡ ᵖᵃʸᶜʰᵉᶜᵏ ᵛᵃˡᵘᵉ ʷᶦˡˡ ᵇᵉ ˡᵉˢˢ
My 2tb Seagate drive only has 1,77tb available... and it’s full...
As the person paying for the drives, I just _love_ the fact that, if I put another 14TB drive in my server, I get another 12.7 TB of storage. I guess that missing 1.3 TB of space is the Hard Drive Mafia's cut.
You should have started with bits.
Fun fact: GB (Gigabyte) and MB (Megabyte) is *NOT* what you Think Is In Windows. So files will appear less than what they might be quoted for on Windows vs. another platform. A 1,000,000,000 byte ( 1000^3 ) 1 gigabyte in Windows will show as 0.931323 Gib (Gigabyte) aka GB in Windows explorer.
TL:DR - the terms "kibibyte," referring to 1024 bytes, and "kilobyte," referring to 1000 bytes, are used interchangeably. However, companies try to scam you out of the least amount of storage, so they use kilobytes legitimately
Stop normalizing 1000 as 1 kB. Kilobyte is 1024 bytes. Deal with it already.
It is impossible, by definition, to look at old days of modern times.
The title has no meaning with the actual content. It explained the size difference with actual capacity, not how much space you need...
Bruh in my school we use megabyte as 1024 kilobytes and so on. Not some mumbo jumbo pepi pipi bytes
256GB M.2 NVMe and 1TB HDD.
How much space do I REALLY have, not much. 2TB sure isn't what it used to be.
I wuold suggest 1Tb and go from there on... 512GiB wuold be full In 1 week of using gaming pc
So... technically the industry isn't lying... it's windows that lies to you and calls gibibytes GigaBytes. in short you do get over 500,000,000,000 bytes when having a "500GB" drive so it is technically correct it's only windows that decides to divide by 1024 instead of 1000 IMO a much worse offender is the "100 Mega" internet connection speed.
With my downloads an music folders being on the separate drive, my main ssd drive usage is always around 10%. My whole system with all my aps is taking up under 20gb. Until recently I did not even know the command to get drive usage
Why is there light disco music playing in the background?
Since the prefixes are exponential the proportional difference increases with every step you go so in theory the issue will actually become more and more significant as we store more and more data. Even just going from Kilo to Peta takes the difference from 2.4% to 12.5%. That's from basically negligible to 1/8th. Of course if storage size stops ballooning, which I think is expectable, this may never come to a head. We'll need to more than double the number of recognized prefixes before it becomes a 50% difference.
James has become my new fav at LMG. I love you too Riley!
1T i need an T
I never understood why it always said GiB instead of GB and that when partitioning my Linux drives that I never had the amount of 'GB' I wanted.
Have you guys ran out of topics to make videos on🙄😂😂
And... Microsoft (among others) perpetuates this problem by STILL referring to 1,073,741,824 bytes as a GB instead of a GiB, even 22 *YEARS* later!
So much math/numbers I can’t watch this.
A little more on 4k being the minimum storage space of a sector on a drive: if a file only takes up 1k, it still takes up the entire sector meaning 3k is wasted. Sectors are clustered together for larger files, with the last sector in the chain suffering the waste. So if a file takes up 10k, that's 3 sectors (12k) with 2k wasted space in the last sector. Literally, a 3k file takes up less space (4k) than three 1k files (which take up 12k).
The thing that still confuses me is the bit-byte thing. I think it comes up more often when talking about networking/connection speeds. But whenever I hear byte (or bit) I usually get lost and I'm always wondering if whatever I'm looking at is apples to apples (for example compared to maybe something else I've seen previously) and yes, I realize this may be very simple to some people
dont know what ur saying but word
Who the f... Still updating wow?
Tech tip: Drive size x 0.931 = usable size
Then in the future there will be a new "GIF vs 'JIF' war" around this and I'll love to watch
But why is it that when I get a 1 tb hard drive it come out to 950 gigs
Because the drive is 1TB, which is 931GiB. Most operating systems (the exception I'm aware of being MacOS) measure sizes in binary, so will report the size as 931GiB. But Windows is silly, and calls it 931GB, when it's not. It's actually just Windows using the wrong unit.
1 MiB as in one Men in Blacks? 😅
