The 2004 FIA Formula One World Championship was the 58th season of FIA Formula One motor racing. It was the 55th FIA Formula One World Championship, and was contested over eighteen races from 7 March to 24 October 2004.
The championship was dominated by Michael Schumacher and Ferrari, with Schumacher winning the Drivers' Championship for the seventh time. Schumacher's teammate Rubens Barrichello finished the championship in second with Jenson Button coming in third for BAR. Ferrari won the Constructors' Championship for a record 14th time ahead of BAR and Renault.
In this championship, several records were broken. Michael Schumacher won 13 races, breaking his record of 11 race wins in one season from 2002. He also broke the record for most consecutive World Drivers' title (5) and Ferrari broke the record for most consecutive Constructors' titles

  • I so badly wanted Toyota to win races or even compete with the top teams in F1 back then. When I was 19 in 1996 I was able to buy my "realistic" dream car, a 100% stock 6 speed twin turbo 1994 Toyota Supra and became a huge Toyota fan. Those cars are so over built from the factory that without doing any internal motor, trans, diff work and mainly bolt ons I bumped it from the stock 320 crank hp to the high 600's at the wheels. It was a few years later when the first Fast and Furious movie came out which is when everyone found out about the Supra and the prices pretty muxh tripled overnight and people were building 1200hp dyno queens all over the place. The only other car Ive got that I like driving as much as is actually faster is my 08 Z06 Corvette. Similar HP but much lighter weight. Its my only car that Ive been able to hit the magical 200mph with also. Anyway, I have always been super bummed that Toyota spent so much money and really only had 1 or 2 years where they seemed like they had the pace to compete for podiums when reliable. Come back Toyota!!!

  • It's a good thing the CRB decided Buttons contract with BAR was legit for 2005. Had Button gone to Williams he likely never would have been world champion. BMW left Williams after the 05 season and had several mediocre seasons starting in 2006 onwards. And the 05 Williams was not even a race winning car.

    Christendom BafflerChristendom BafflerHónapja
    • He was brash, and exciting. For a few years, he was the only driver who could match Schumacher’s tenacity. Keep in mind that after Adelaide 94 and Jerez 97, Schumacher had a reputation as a bad boy, and could bully most drivers on circuit. Montoya arrived and showed that he was ready to go toe to toe with Schumacher, and he earned a lot of respect for it. Off the circuit, Montoya was a little bit more candid and raw than many of the other drivers of the time.

  • No DRS overtakes were fought for , real drivers big balls v10 twitchy light fast cars. Far more enjoyable than the garbage we have today.

    • @THE Riften Guard not garbage. But not very far from that. Todays F1 is a shadow of itself. Run off areas where drivers can make hundreds of mistakes without even loosing time, drivers who barely drive on the limit because 35 cooling circles, engine, gearbox and tyres who have to be "managed", DRS which totally killed close battles and made overtaking a fly by, and engines which sound like vacuum cleaners, strategy down to over- or undercut, Pirelli tyres which are really garbage compared to the Bridgestones and Michelins or Goodyears who constantly developed their tyres and built real "racing tyres" not show-tyres, cars with a unusual wheelbase that made them totally sluggish, a totally restrictive technical reglement where even weight distribution and most of the engine dimensions are fixed- lets be honest - todays F1 is a shadow of what it used to be. Thats why there will be the biggest rule change ever in 2022, and thats why only 400 mil. people are watching F1, not 850 mil. like 20 years ago. If you think you have to answear - i switched off to get noticed. Because i do not want to waste time discussion about things that cannot be discussed. Like that. F1 is a shadow of itself. Thats why the spent so much money to find out how to fix it. Experts and Insiders agree on that. Most fans and audience, too. Thats why F1 declined for many years in that regard. You cannot discuss that. It obvious.

      Michaela HungerMichaela HungerHónapja

    • you always have to differentiate between bad races and bad championship fights. 2010 had a great championship battle, but many very very boring races. 2020 on the other hand had no championship battle at all, but many great races. Another example would be 2011. there was also no championship battle at all, but quite a few good races and with canada one of the greatest races of all time

Guardian of the BlindGuardian of the BlindHónapja
    • @storyteller Of course there was dynamism in the field. More than now. Surely it was a bit boring because of the ferrari dominance but if you look at qualifying.. Ferrari didn't always have both cars at the top, also due to different amounts of fuel and the tires, but you couldn't predict who would be in front and that's where the whole thing begins. If you take Canada, for example, if Sato doesn't miss his lap, then both ferrari start, noted with more fuel, on place 7/8. If trulli doesn´t fail immediately at the start and alonso later, it would not have been so easy even for Ferrari to make it to the top. And yes Williams unfortunately miscalculated his nose and Mclaren was shit until france. Renault had too little power and took the final step with the car in 2005. Of course, I agree with you, because the other teams simply weakened for the first half of the season(and ferrari was also a bit lucky in a few races where it could get tighter). Yea after a few races it was clear that Schumacher would become wc.

      saT cssaT csHónapja
    • @saT cs oh yes. 2004 was so dynamic... ferrari in the front, mclaren confiability levels below zero, williams shitty nose and chassis, and then, the rest. schumacher had the title since race one. i watch races to see rivals battling for the championship, not to see sauber versus jordan for 13th. pathetic.

    • @storyteller nope.. i agree with benjamin. ok the season was obviously not that exciting like 2003, but there was dynamism in the field and many good races as already mentioned.

      saT cssaT csHónapja
    • @Rhys Benjamin ferrari dominance was boring as shit. schumacher and his good boy rubens had a car so ahead of all others.. 2005, 2006, 2007 was good seasons, 2008 was a good season, 2010 was a good season.. but 2004? pfff c’mon man... boring as hell!

Steve De la RochaSteve De la RochaHónapja
    • @Bakut3n France and England maybe, but those two it's because the tobacco publicity is forbidden in the country, others teams weren't allowed too. Canada I don't know

Steve De la RochaSteve De la RochaHónapja
    • They also didn’t run Marlboro sponsorship in Canada and another race. Forget which one. Wonder why they didn’t elsewhere

    • At this time, tobacco companies were allowed to sponsor in Motorsports in the United States. However, there was a stipulation. Marlboro sponsored the Marlboro Team Penske in Indycar. The tobacco companies in F1 were only allowed to run their sponsor at Indy if that sponsor did not sponsor another team in Motorsports in an American series. Since Mild Seven, Lucky Strike, West, Benson and Hedges etc did not sponsor any Indycar, champ car, Nascar or any other series in the US, they were allowed to run their regular liveries.

  • 2004. Best year in F1

    • My opinion has come full circle, but we're acting like LH has retired his still got another 3 yrs he still could achieve much more (1 at mercedes and maybe 2yrs at Aston Martin with Vettel) lol that would be fun

      Charles BeasleyCharles Beasley27 napja
    • @faxbxo LP and as for points and race wins. I would like to see the stats for '25 pts system applied to all race from 1950's'. Plus there are more races on the race calender.

      Charles BeasleyCharles Beasley27 napja
    • @faxbxo LP after thinking about it, LH has had a protected career. Started as a rookie in the best car and each of his championships have been with the best car. It the same as vettels 4 championships, alot of drivers are better that him but not achieved as much.

      Charles BeasleyCharles Beasley27 napja
    • @Charles Beasley because Michael won two Championships against a dominating Williams car. Michael Schumacher is one of the best Eger drivers but I wouldn‘t count Lewis Hamilton on this List .He‘s a Good driver but nothing more. I would like to See him in a Aston Martin but That will never happen.

Back then I got up extra at night to see different sessions. Nowadays I don't want anything else but the product F1 is just bad for me and as much as I love Formula 1 I think it's just terrible to look at. These much too big and heavy cars with aerodynamics that make fighting so difficult and you just wait to push drs because otherwise the tires will overheat. Driving errors are no longer punished like this. The driver is told everything over the radio(should be forbidden). Instead of changing something sensible, they change start times back and forth. And much more..
